A lease of things is a reciprocal agreement in terms of which one party, the lessor, undertakes to confer upon another party, the lessee, the temporary use and enjoyment of a particular thing (res) in exchange for counter-performance.

The leases can be long leases or short leases i.e. fixed term lease. In terms of the Deeds Registries Act [Chapter 20:05] long term lease, that are more than ten (10) yeas must be registered with the Deeds Registry.
